1584 Robert Johnson founded the school. From a Welsh family. At some time between 1479 and 1493 his father Morris/Morrice went from Shropshire to Stamford, possibly after Henry Tudor's victory at Bosworth. Morrice Johnson was a Master Dyer, Alderman, and in 1523 MP with William Cecil, later Lord Burghley's grandfather. This link with the Cecil family was to be important in Robert Johnson's career.

THE CIVIL WAR AND PERIOD OF DECLINE. 1584-1643 The "Dark Ages" of the history of the school. Names of Masters and Ushers (Assistant Masters) are known, but little else.

(The first to be called Headmaster.) “THE HIGH CHARACTER OF THE SCHOOL IS BECOMING MORE KNOWN EVERY DAY”.(Wm Sewell, Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford 1846).

Born at Alford in Somerset on 29 November 1821. His father John was squire and Rector at Alford. Edward was Educated at Ilminster Grammar, and Eton where he was Captain of Collegers. King’s College Cambridge 1841. Fellow of King’s from 1844-1853. 1846 ordained. Author of many publications. ‘Theory and Practice of Teaching’ was published in numerous editions. 10th September 1853 aged 31 he became Headmaster at Uppingham School. Married Marie Koch on 22nd October 1853. Edward and Marie had four children, three daughters and one son. Edward died on 22nd October 1887.

Revd. Dr. Edward Caruss Selwyn, born November 1853. Educated at Eton and King’s College, Cambridge. Fellow of King’s College, and Lecturer 1876-1878. Curate of St.Paul’s Jarrow–on-Tyne 1879. Dean of King’s College Cambridge 1880-1882, also Lecturer at King’s and Emmanuel Colleges. Principal of Liverpool College 1882-1887. Retired to Hindhead. Author of several publications on religious subjects. Died 8th November 1918.

7: 1908 – 1915 REV H W McKENZIE HEADMASTER   OU Admin 2/3/2012 10:44:06 AM    
Harry Ward McKenzie. Born 10 December 1850; Educated, Keble College Oxford. Assistant master at Loretto School and St. Paul’s College Stony Stratford. Tutor and Bursar Wellington College. Headmaster Lancing College 1889-1894. Second Master at Durham School 1894 and Headmaster at Durham 1905-1907. Retired to Oxford. Died 17th April 1941.

8: 1916 – 1934 R H OWEN HEADMASTER   OU Admin 2/3/2012 10:37:34 AM    
Reginald Herbert Owen, born 25 May 1887. Educated at Dulwich College and Wadham College Oxford. Assistant Master Clifton College 1910-1912. Fellow and Classical Lecturer Worcester College Oxford 1912-1915. Joint Secretary Oxford and Cambridge Examination Board 1913-1915. Fellow Chaplain and Classical Lecturer Brasenose College Oxford 1934-1946. Bishop of Wellington New Zealand 1947-1960. Primate and Archbishop of New Zealand 1952-1960. Died 24th February 1961.

9: 1934 – 1944 J F WOLFENDEN HEADMASTER   OU Admin 2/3/2012 10:35:04 AM    
Owen had been only 28 when appointed, Wolfenden was only 27; Fellow in philosophy at Magdelen College, Oxford, and a hockey international.

10: 1944 – 1965 MARTIN LLOYD HEADMASTER   OU Admin 2/3/2012 10:31:31 AM    
Martin Lloyd, born 1908. Educated at Marlborough College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Assistant Master at Rugby School 1930-1940. Military service 1940-1944. Warden Missenden Abbey Adult Education College 1966-1974. Retired to Stroud. Died 28th August 1989.
