For the past 150 years Uppingham has enjoyed a strong reputation for music. When Uppingham's visionary Victorian Headmaster Edward Thring appointed Paul David in 1865 to be the School’s first ever Director of Music, he sought out the very best and the tradition of musical excellence at Uppingham began. Paul David was followed by Robert Sterndale-Bennet from 1908-1945, grandson of the eminent Sir William Sterndale-Bennet. He was succeeded by Douglas Guest, who moved Uppingham's musical traditions on even further - the concert choir was expanded: a bandmaster was appointed; music scholarships were introduced; and various music societies were created. All of these innovations still flourish under Andrew Kennedy's (F 90) legendary energy and charisma.
In celebration and in recognition of Sterndale-Bennet and Douglas Guest, The Old Music School and the New Music School will be renamed to mark their incredible and inspiurational achievements and we hope OUs will join us to celebrate the occasion.
